FOUNTAIN
OF YOUTH
If you are trying to improve your mental and physical health then you might want to consider taking some dance classes. Dancing is a great way to get in shape, become more aware of your body, and it gives you a chance to expand your socialization skills. If you are bored with exercising and want to spice it up a little, then dance might be the thing for you. Dancing can burn as many calories as walking, swimming or riding a bicycle. During a half hour of sustained dancing you can burn between 200 and 400 calories. One factor that determines how many calories you'll expend is distance. In one study, researchers attached pedometers to salsa dancers and found each person covered nearly five miles in a single evening. With regular exercise you can attain a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure and an improved cholesterol profile. Experts typically recommend 30 to 40 minutes of continuous activity three to four times a week. Dancing is a safe alternative to other conventional ways of exercising. Just keep in mind that the degree of cardiovascular conditioning depends on how vigorously you dance, how long you dance continuously and how regularly you do it.
The side to side movements of many dances strengthen your weight bearing bones and can help prevent or lower loss of bone mass. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you are too out of shape or physically incapable of indulging your self in this beautiful art. Dance is for every type of body and even every physical capability. If you're recovering from heart, knee surgery, or any other injury, (depending on which type of dance you do) movement may be part of your rehabilitation.
Aside from all of the obvious physical benefits, dance also offers mental incentives. Dancing is a great stress reliever because it makes you process steps, time, and movement which in turn gives your mind a chance to escape everyday stress. Dancing also contains a social component that solitary fitness endeavors don't. It gives you an opportunity to develop strong social ties which contribute to self esteem and a positive outlook.
