Boot Camp Fever Hits the Valley
By Ariana Mata - boot camp participant

Usually when I hear the words boot camp I immediately think of those loud drill instructors that put the fear of God in you. But these days boot camp brings a new meaning to fitness. Boot Camps are held outdoors at community parks and beaches. Participants cover every major fitness component from strengthening, endurance, flexibility and even agility drills. This is an old fashion workout- no gyms, no air conditioner and no television, strictly fitness. Expect to do push ups, crunches, lunges and work with resistance tubing in addition to other exercises that will make you sweat massively. The drill instructor will not yell at you or call you names. What they will do is motivate and encourage you as they keep you working hard through the session. Camps are held rain or shine so be prepared to endure mother nature’s elements and get dirty. After one month in Fitness Boot Camp you will not only have lost weight and body fat percentage, but you will be stronger and faster. You will have gained a higher level of endurance regardless of the level of fitness you started at.

I honestly thought this would be a piece of cake. I mean come on we all remember gym class, not that big of a deal, right? Wrong. Boy, was I wrong. This was work. Hard work. I was using muscles I didn’t even know I had. I was running and jumping. I had to really focus, just to get the drills right. One exercise consisted of two different drills at the same time. I completely forgot how grueling push-ups are. By the end of the hour I was just dripping with sweat and dead tired. But after a month I did realize significant changes in my body. My clothes were fitting loose and I had a great deal of energy. Boot camp is hard work. It takes a great deal of dedication and commitment from you. It may not be for everyone, but it is definitely for your health. The boot camp I participated in was through Explosive Fitness.
